Vacation

I wanted to go for a watercolor type look to this work in oil. I left large shapes "open" by unpainted canvas (trees). The outlines and contours were done using india ink and I left the drips as a note of interest.

City View via Bridge

Neighborhood Greens

17" x 11" watercolor on paper. This is just a rather quick watercolor sketch on drawing paper. I really enjoy doing these types of fast sketches pushing shapes, value, and color. I've been a bit under-the-weather lately, so updates have been less frequent. Will try to do better.

Foggy Coast Morning

This is my first try at a diptych (two canvases representing one image). The view is a foggy morning along an imaginary coastal city. The background bridge is almost obscurred by the rolling fog. I kind of like how this one turned out. I'm going to try this one on eBay.

Charles Sovek

It is with great sadness that I report the death of Charles Sovek. His web site states that he died on June 8th.

I consider Mr. Sovek to be a modern master artist, and I have learned a great deal from his fine books and in a workshop I took with him in AZ. Please take a look at his very nice site that is linked here to the right.

June 6, 1944 "D-Day"

I'm a day late for this. No art today. Instead, I wanted to say a special thank you to our "Greatest Generation" for their ultimate sacrifice.

I am somewhat of an amateur history buff. Today, 63 years ago, men from the US and England began the long campaign to defeat Nazi Germany. The price they paid was enormous, and I want to thank them and all the others who bravely fought in those days.

Thank you does not say enough!

Continuing with the color studies, this is a closeup of a medicine bottle. The nice amber/orange color was my main interest here. This one turned out OK, but I may redo with a setup of colored paper on the sides.

Lemon (Study #1)

Here is a still life setup to study how reflected light influences the surfaces and colors involved. The box had a piece of blue construction paper for the back wall, a red piece on the floor, and a light orange for the right wall. The light source is coming from the left. The painting shows the true colors in the scene and I tried my best to match all the colors I saw. More studies to come soon.
